The Matchbox connects artists with communities, telling stories through public art.
Our Story
The Strike
The Matchbox name and brand was inspired by The Matchgirls’ Strike in 1888, in which the women and girls of the Bryant & May match factory in Bow, east London took to the streets to protest for better working conditions, becoming torchbearers for positive and progressive change.
The Spark
Our Collective was formed by a group of professional muralists, street artists and sign painters who decided to create a community within which we could all shine. We are passionate about supporting others and firmly believe that collective and grassroots approaches are essential for sustainable and positive change.
The Flame
With a strong and supportive community and ever growing network, we’ve been able to accelerate our ambitions to bring collaborative and radical change to the creative industry. Creating more opportunities for artists, platforming more amazing communities and painting more walls with beautiful and colourful art.
